General info:

The Maritime Museum of Cantabria is situated between the promontory of San Martin and "Los Peligros" on the coastline. This museum explains the historical relation between the sea, the man and the technology over time. In the Cantabrian Maritime Museum, visitors have the opportunity to delve into the depths of marine biology, fisheries ethnography, history and technology of the Cantabrian Sea and its projection into the world.

The Museum contains a large, modern aquarium with more than 3,000 square meters.

MUSEUM OF PREHISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF CANTABRIA

General info:

Stone tools and, above all, art furniture, carved bones and antler are the heritage of this museum. Cantabria is a reference to this Museum that treasures the remnants cave painting of sites of recognized fame as The Garma, El Castillo and Altamira Caves.

General info:

The Museum of Fine Arts of Santander is a public entity belonging to Santander’s Hall. It was founded in 1908 and the building itself is nice to visit. Its main objective is to acquire, study, exhibit and make known artistic and cultural heritage. It exhibits 800 paintings, 300 sculptures, 200 engravings, drawings and photographs, medals and stamps from the sixteenth century to the present. It important to highlight the permanent collection of Flemish, Italian and Spanish painters as from the sixteenth century. The Museum organises regular temporary exhibitions of national and international artists and activities for all ages.  If you visit this Museum you will receive some descriptive cards available in English.

This This great Library contains all the bibliographic heritage that the Santander polygraph Marcelino Menéndez-Pelayo left as a legacy to the city and that is composed of more than 42,000 printed volumes, 23 incunabula and manuscripts of incalculable value from Lope de Vega and Quevedo, among other authors. For its part, the House-Museum of Menéndez Pelayo was built in 1876 and displays an interesting collection of period objects and objects, which were the property of the scholar.

This small museum is, in fact, an exhibition of objects related to the world of bullfighting: costumes of lights, capes, posters, engravings, collections of tickets, etc.

AIR-RAID SHELTER OF SANTANDER

 

General info:

This interpretation centre is located in the Plaza de Velarde, known as Plaza Porticada, in the space that was once part of the 'Puebla Nueva' of the medieval town of Santander.

One of the main elements shown to the public is a section of the medieval wall of the town, and a number of archaeological structures that will offer you the opportunity to understand the evolution of urban space in Santander.

General info:

Under the Plaza de Mariana Pineda (today Plaza del Principe), the "santanderinos" built in a refuge from the bombing of aviation during the Civil war, it was in the spring of 1937. This air-raid shelter has been retorted and you can visit it.

Santander suffered 34 bombing attacks during the Civil War and this shelter was very useful. In almost a hundred meters from the refuge, you will revive and understand how the bombing was (you will even hear explosions, the sound of the sirens and the walls will seem to shake).
